CALL FOR ARTISTS           Application Deadline March 15th  2008

The 9th USUK International Cast Iron Sculpture Symposium at Butley Mills Studios, Suffolk, England

Friday 6th June – Sunday 15th June 2008

The 9th USUK Iron Symposium will take place over 10 days during which 16 artists from the international community will each produce a piece of cast iron Sculpture. Participants can use traditional or experimental techniques to create molds in preparation for the Public Iron Pour that concludes the week. Each artist is given the opportunity to exhibit in an exhibition of contemporary cast iron sculpture at New Cut Arts Centre in Halesworth.

The focus of USUK is to provide a platform for artists to explore and push the boundaries of the cast iron medium in contemporary sculpture. In addition to technical demonstrations and presentations structured throughout the symposium, artists learn from each other by working in a critically engaged environment created by the symposium and its unique site. No previous casting experience is necessary so artists from different disciplines are encouraged to apply. In previous years there has been participation and collaboration from land artists, paper makers, biologists, archaeologists, and architects.

USUK was founded in 1997 by Sculptor Coral Lambert and over the past ten years has traveled to many different places including Wales, England and in America, New Orleans, Minnesota and New York. The 1st, 3rd and 5th USUK were hosted by Sculptor Laurence Edwards and the artists of Yew Tree Farm in Suffolk, England. They are excited to have the 9th USUK Symposium held at their new home of Butley Mills Studios.  The old grain stores of Butley Mill remained empty after its closure until it was transformed five years ago to accommodate around twelve artists. Situated two hours north east of London, the studios look out over the Tilde River, Orford Ness surrounded by farmland and ancient Oak woodland.

The cost to each participant is £275, which includes all materials for casting, a studio space, equipment usage and technical guidance. There is a range of studio spaces available through out the main studios and various out buildings. Food and Travel to and from the symposium is the responsibility of the artist as is accommodation although limited facilities are available on sight for those willing to camp.  Artists are asked to participate in the rotating schedule for cooking dinner.

Digital applications will be accepted via email so please send :
