The 10th USUK International Cast Iron Sculpture Symposium at Salem Art Works, Salem, New York

Friday 12th June – Sunday 21st June 2009

The 10th USUK Iron Symposium will take place over 10 day’s. Fifteen artists will be selected internationally to each produce a cast iron sculpture during the symposium using traditional and experimental molds. Founded in 1997 the focus of the symposium is to provide a platform for artists to explore and push the boundaries of the cast iron medium in contemporary sculpture. In addition to technical demonstrations and presentations structured throughout the symposium, artists learn from each other by working together in the critically engaged environment created by the symposium and its unique site. No previous casting experience is necessary; artists from different disciplines are encouraged to apply. In the past there have been participation and collaborations from land artists, paper makers, biologists, archeologists and architects. Directed by Sculptor Coral Lambert, the USUK Symposium will culminate in a Public Iron Pour and Exhibition at Salem Art Works, in upstate New York.

USUK has taken place in different venues over the past 10 years including England, Wales, and America in New Orleans and Minnesota, this year for the second time it will be held at Salem Art Works in New York. SAW is an independent artists' community where experienced artists and newcomers alike can work, exhibit, nurture new ideas, and learn from each other. Situated 200 miles north of New York City on 120 acres of rolling hillsides, SAW's intimate campus is surrounded by thick woods, running streams, ponds, pastures, and rustic outbuildings that reflect its history as a working dairy farm.

The cost to each participant is $35O, which includes all materials for casting, a studio space, equipment usage, technical guidance, as well as a modest living space or tent platform and good food. The studios range from open spaces throughout various barns, more defined spaces with close-by utilities, or working within the 119 acre surrounding landscape. Food is provided and Artists are asked to participate in the rotating schedule for cooking dinner. Travel to and from the USUK Symposium at SAW is the responsibility of the artist although there may be some travel stipends available. Limited group transportation will be also available from trains, buses and planes from Albany, NY.
